Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is the first film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, based off the ride at Disney World. The fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales is due out later this month, and I had an opportunity to watch the first four films, and wonder how a franchise based off a theme park ride managed to get made into one of the biggest film franchises ever.
Captain Jack Sparrow is a pirate in search of a ship after his last ship, the Black Pearl was taken over by his first mate, Captain Barbossa. Barbossa and his crew have been placed under a curse bestowed by Aztec gold, and must return every last piece of the treasure they took that started the curse, along with blood from those who took it. However, when they mistakenly take Elizabeth Swan, believing her to be the way to break the curse, Jack teams up with blacksmith Will Turner to rescue her, but Jack also aims to take back his ship.
